Episode 235 - Long Path FKT with Kumi and Glen Redpath

Welcome to episode 235! This week, Tad and I are joined by Kumi and Glenn Redpath for one hell of a conversation! Back in May, Kumi set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Long Path, and she joins us to tell the story behind the record—from the tough moments and unexpected challenges to the fun, the laughs, and everything in between. And of course, no record-setting effort happens alone, so Glenn joins us to talk about what it was like being Kumi’s crew chief and helping keep the whole operation moving. We also dive into recent rescues, the loss of some of our favorite Catskill viewpoints, and a pretty big milestone—the five-year anniversary of the podcast! Make sure to subscribe on your favorite platform, share the show, donate if you feel like it… or just keep tuning in. I'm just grateful you're here. And as always... VOLUNTEER!!!!

[00:00:29] The bushwhacks were some of the worst days I've ever had in the mountains, or life really Whereas Pantsy Mountain is totally opposite, it's a mountain on top of a crater I think the weather challenges on this incident were particularly difficult It is really the development of New York State, Catskills will respond to it

[00:00:52] Passing into Inside The Line, the Catskill Mountains Podcast Alright, so are we gonna open our beers soon? Yeah, yeah, yeah Alright, do that

[00:01:15] Episode 235, Kumi Redpath and Glen Redpath joins us tonight to talk about the long path, Fastest Known Time that Kumi set back in May 10th of 2026 7 hours, 7 hours, 7 hours, 7 hours again, I said this with later on 7 days, 7 hours and 59 minutes Unbelievable, unbelievable But, so for that, what are we gonna do right now, Ted? Were we gonna crack open one for?

[00:01:46] Alright, I jumped the gun, was that unfair of me? Not at all Sounds good, good Alright You can tell one of us had a hard day No, we both had fantastic days, so Excellent, excellent So, Kumi joins us tonight Gonna be a great conversation about her Fastest Known Time on the Long Path 358 miles Just not just, it's a brutal terrain

[00:02:14] Nice, fun terrain, viewpoints, stuff like that But that wasn't the case How many miles? 358 In 7 days and what? Just under 8 hours So, yep Correct Just a second under 8 hours Unbelievable Yeah, yeah, crazy Yeah, it's insane It's insane So she And we'll hear all about it Yeah The joy and the hardships All wrapped into 7 days and 8 hours of fun

[00:02:43] Yeah, speaking of joy and hardships Not really, all joy, all joy So last Tuesday, the 18th I just wanna let you know that this was the 5 year anniversary of me launching the show Doing my pilot episode and starting up everything and making it real Wow And I just wanna say 5 years I'm humbled I am in joy and happiness and stuff like that of what it's become

[00:03:09] And it's, I thank you Tad for joining me You know, I thank you once again before you join me For giving me some positive feedback, stuff like that to keep pushing me And then once again, I'm glad I got you to jump on this train wreck That you have put back on the rails And that we've gotten going So everybody, 5 years Cheers to 5 years here Cheers, buddy Cheers, man Thank you for joining me along

[00:03:37] And thank you everyone who is still listening to the show I greatly appreciate it So, I gotta say Like you say later in the show One hell of a fucking community we have here in the Catskills And we, I don't know It's just, it's a great feeling No, no, no signs of stopping at all Screw that Like that live show, that was fun Looking to do another live show, I'm guessing You know, I was thinking Tad, it'd be weird to have it like

[00:04:05] You know, I wanna do it down in the Hudson Valley and stuff Like at a cidery or something like that Or a bar Maybe have it on like a Friday evening After everybody gets out of work and have fun Instead of like making everybody do the fastest known time On one of their hikes to get there At 3 o'clock in the afternoon on a Saturday Like I see you do it on a Saturday afternoon in the Catskills Late, everybody can do a hike Finish their hike 1, 2, 3 o'clock

[00:04:35] 4 o'clock the podcast starts Sounds good If you are interested, let me know Yeah Yeah, and I hear That Todd Bold is supplying the refreshments I mean, I Probably I would say I mean, he's a He resupplied us at Climate for Climate So Yeah, definitely And I'm having one of his tonight Yeah, yeah, I'm having One of Krasoula's tonight

[00:05:04] And we'll talk about that later Oh, alright, good So On to the next So I wanted to let everybody know I'm gonna try to post this to Instagram somehow I did a petition To check out the DEC To check out our vistas That we are continuously losing in the Catskills You know, I talked about this last show And a couple episodes before That a lot of our viewpoints in the Catskills are diminishing Like, I'm not talking, you know, like they restore one

[00:05:34] We're losing another one They restore one viewpoint and we're losing like 12 Like, I have to go on the map Count how many viewpoints we have And then count how many viewpoints we've lost Because I gotta admit A lot of viewpoints have been lost You know, I, to name a few My whole Barnum Road that I maintain I go up, most of all the viewpoints are gone Thomas Cole, the bottom of Thomas Cole That inspires people to go up from Barnum Road

[00:06:03] To get away from frickin' Big Hollow That's gone Balsam is almost gone The Summit of Panther is gone Bear Pen I heard that Bear Pen is almost lots its viewpoint The far north part of Bear Pen Jim Bouton has been contacting me And then just tell me So many viewpoints have been lost That it's actually Geiger Point Over on Hunter Mountain The marked point, not even Geiger Point

[00:06:32] The marked spot off of the spur trail One of the spur trails for a viewpoint Is gone on Hunter Mountain So these, these are marked places That they have specifically put a yellow trail to A marked viewpoint that are gone So I have, I have a petition Check it out, so sorry I wonder what the justification is Not to maintain these viewpoints Or reestablish them If there's an official DEC policy To do nothing

[00:07:02] And let them grow in Or if there's Talk of in 2027, 2028 But what obviously can be done That Stosh doesn't want to bring up But we do have our Bias Cider program Right I think we should roll out a Bias Chainsaw program Okay It's disappointing I mean for me, people like me I love viewpoints Kind of inspires me to get up to the next spot Or something

[00:07:32] And recently I did Indian Head I talked about this And we lost like two or three viewpoints On Indian Head And that's, that's a pretty significant Area to know, to lose a viewpoint Especially when you're doing the devil's path It's motivation to start And stuff and you know I'm not asking the DEC to go down And fricking chainsaw everything Maybe, you know, help trim here and there Teach us volunteers That would love to learn about this To learn about, you know

[00:08:00] Instead of just like little snippets I forgot what the two feet off the trail Or something like that And they have to be a certain width But to teach us to do this Because we have amazing volunteers out there That would probably like to do this And to learn how to do this I would love for the DEC Or for the New York and New Jersey Trail Conference To teach me how to, you know Clear these viewpoints appropriately And not just to go up with a chainsaw And hack them down I would never do that

[00:08:28] And we've seen that before, you know Cheryl, right in the bottom of Cheryl Was illegally cut But it's a fantastic view point So I'm not going to object to that Like I'm sorry, but Friday Mountain That little above Ralph's ramps Was illegally cut, but it's a fucking Fantastic viewpoint, one of the best in Catskills You know, so Not saying go Don't go out there and frickin' illegally cut this Let's get this done properly And see what we can do

[00:08:58] Take the steps and procedures I'm going to be speaking at the next CPAC meeting The Catskill Park Advisory Committee meeting I think they give me 30 frickin' seconds to chat I'm going to take it a little bit beyond that I'm going to say, hey I'm going to talk But that's it, sorry, rant over But, so, sign the petition I don't know what Tad's going to do He's going to, he's going to probably be like Listen, I don't need, I'm going to go off trail all the time I don't need few points

[00:09:29] Yeah, well, you know Eventually I'm going to get back to hiking in the Catskills So you better get cracking, Stosh Cause... I'm on it Speaking of being on it Our local rescues have been on it lately We have a bunch of local rescues to talk about So in Wyndham On August 11th, 8pm Raybrook Disprach received a call for a lost hiker off trail on Wyndham High Peak That's a little tough

[00:09:56] Force Rangers Comerford and Dawson hiked in from opposite sides of the mountains They arrived at the Elm Ridge leading to 10 minutes apart Shortly before 9pm Rangers Comerford made a voice contact with a 32-year-old from New Jersey at 920 Comerford reached his subject in good health but without a light source Ranger Comerford provided a headlamp and hiked the subject out of the woods at 940 The Reach Peck Road Ranger says that bring in a headlamp or a flashlight and extra batteries If you're not planning to hike in the night

[00:10:26] Light is one of the 10 essentials Yeah, so... I got nagged for not showing sympathy to people Getting lost in situations like this But like this, it is 9 o'clock When did this person start? Number one, where did they start from? Once again, details we need for this To maybe make an accurate Like...

[00:10:56] What do we call it? Learning moment Yeah, learning moment Observation To learn from this person's mistakes You know, we can do the debrief and Learn from it so we don't find ourselves in that situation Yeah, it seems like New York State doesn't like to give out the details to that And we'll find out probably on the next episode that that's... You can figure out ways to do that And Tad does that very well by the way

[00:11:23] But once again, like was this Perkins hiking up from Elm Ridge? Did they go from Big Hollow? And like it seems... Yeah, well they let him out to the Peck Road trailhead Which is an indication that's where he started from Or where he needed to get to Because there was no point in taking him there if his car was elsewhere True, true That's my take on it, but they don't tell us that Yeah, they might have went to Peck Road and to drive him back to Big Hollow Because he came over and summited

[00:11:52] But once again, like I mean To get lost on On The Wyndham High Peak is a little tough Because it's a well-traffic trail Hmm, but when it's pitch blackout I can see True, okay, okay That I do get But my more philosophical or Politically slanted Question is That here you have New York State DEC Rangers

[00:12:19] Out presumably getting overtime pay Using New York State resources To rescue A 32 year old hiker from New Jersey Who does not pay New York State taxes Should that person be responsible for paying For the rescue? That is correct I think it should be Yeah, because that bill falls on the New York State taxpayer base And so there's a certain sense of fairness Making

[00:12:49] Somebody who's from out of state Who doesn't contribute to The The funding of the New York State DEC To have them pay for the rescue And that might seem harsh to some people Saying that And maybe a better way of doing it Is like they do up in New Hampshire With the hike safe card And that if you're in New York And you have a New York hike safe card Regardless of what state you live in And pay taxes in Or don't pay taxes Maybe you're not a wage earner

[00:13:18] But if you have a hike safe card Then you're contributing towards that rescue effort And generally speaking Your rescue is covered Then we can talk about the extreme case Where you do something really idiotic And you need a helicopter And then we can no matter where you live And what you pay in taxes Or have a hike safe card Should you pay for the helicopter rescue? But that isn't this case This is, you know, that this guy just didn't have One of the basics According to the report

[00:13:46] A flashlight or other light source And he needed to be guided out In the dark Should he have to pay something for that? And maybe when that starts happening And that type of deterrent To people When word gets around People will start thinking twice about Okay, yeah, you know, I need a flashlight And I need to make sure, you know, that it actually works Before I go out Oh, let me figure out how this compass works

[00:14:15] And this map works Because I can spend five minutes on the internet Figuring out how to orientate myself With the map and compass As opposed to paying 500 bucks To have the DEC give me a lesson At the Elm Ridge lean-to Right. Yeah, it's And, you know, will it ever come to that? Of where we will be like New Hampshire, you know, and You know, as we're getting these calls And rescues and stuff like that

[00:14:43] I don't see this happening as frequently in Vermont So they don't have that kind of deal But with the Adirondacks and the Catskills And the Hudson Valley area I see this happen a lot And hopefully one time we'll get like that in New Hampshire Like how much does it cost? I forgot, it's like $15 for a hike Or $25 for a hike safeguard A year. Yeah. We're not talking monthly A year. So you do $25, you know, times What, a thousand people?

[00:15:13] That's 25... There's more than a thousand There's gotta be at least 16,000 hikers in the Catskills That would... Well, yeah, that would... I mean, in Adirondacks that would do it So that would generate some good revenue To... Like what? Yeah, I mean, you know, you do the math It works out, it generates a lot of money We know our rangers are underfunded They have to buy a lot of their own gear For these rescues and for the work they do So if everybody was required to buy a hike safeguard And I know I would

[00:15:43] Aside from that, I also give money to the Rangers Foundation But, you know, to me it makes sense And... Definitely does And it also, it puts people, you know You fill out the form online To buy your hike safeguard or whatever they wanna call it But you could be obligated to sit through like a Three or five minute, how many ever minute long Educational video, answer a few questions And actually learn a few things About hiking and hiking safely

[00:16:13] And leave no trace before you leave your car at the trailhead And head out into the mountains Yeah, this is why the... Our listening community should vote for us To take over the DEC And make it More efficient And... Pragmatic for the hiking community Correct. We're gonna launch that You know, we started off with the Viewshed petition I think we should just migrate right into the Stash and Tad for DEC commissioners petition

[00:16:43] I agree That's not unreasonable Not unreasonable at all And with that, with that, while you go into the next thing I'm just gonna have another sip of this delicious IPO True. I think I said I got it from Todd Bould I did... I got... I got it... Yeah, that's good, that's good So... Speaking of the next rescue Next day, August 12th, 3.30pm Comfort once again Responded to a call for a hiker Who hit their head near Devil's Kitchen Lean 2 in the Indian Head Wilderness

[00:17:11] So this goes from one end to the other At 4.20pm Ranger Comfort A Green County paramedic and a hunter EMS Reached a 70 year old from New Jersey The paramedic conducted a patient assessment Along with Ranger Comfort Assisted the hiker back to the trail Had rescuers cleaned the subject wounds And the patients refused murder medical attention The incident was clear at 5.30pm So, two hour rescue Devil's Kitchen Lean 2 So, I'm guessing it came out from Indian Head Mountain

[00:17:40] And unfortunately got into an accident on the steeper areas Or just slipped on one of those I gotta admit there's a couple flat Like curvy rocks there that have a bunch of moss that you should avoid But, you know, that's unfortunate Yeah, glad I didn't hit my head when I fell Yeah, right, and you hit your shoulder And it only takes five months of recovery Yeah, it actually didn't hit my shoulder either

[00:18:09] So, it was a chain reaction Ah, gotcha That's a whole other story Yeah, but feel for that 70 year old But, you know, look at that The situation doesn't look like he was negligent That was just, you know, your random hiking incident Hard to say what he could have done to have prevented it Hey So, we're not gonna charge him We won't charge No bill, we're not sending him a bill The other guy's gotta The prior guy's gotta send in Four IPAs and six hard-siders

[00:18:39] I agree, that's a great thing We'll find out the person's name Last but not least In Hunter August 16th 5.30pm While on patrol Forest Ranger Comford Once again, this guy We need to get him on a show The next one Was alerted to an 11-year-old hiker With an anchor injury On the Lower Falls Trail of Catterescoe Falls Comford and assistant former ranger DeWitt carried the subject Back to the Laurel House trailhead And the child's family Transported them to the hospital

[00:19:09] The incident was clear at 6.14pm So, an hour and 14 minute Rescue, or Yeah, yeah No, no, under an hour So, yeah So, they had to carry the kid up So, kudos to them Comford! Jesus! Yeah This person was all over the place The ranger's just ripping it up Yeah, looks like he You know, the triple header Yeah, right I think in hockey they call that

[00:19:38] The hat trick It's a hat trick, Comford had the hat trick So, I'm gonna reach out to Jeff To have Comford come on the show And talk about this Because recently, you know That Dawson was over there So, apparently Comford's the new Person that's trying to take over The area So, sorry Dawson You're out of a job, buddy Or maybe Dawson was on vacation I hope fucking Dawson took a vacation Yeah God That guy is everywhere and does everything So, crazy

[00:20:08] Anything else you wanna add to shooting the shit? No Like that? That was a question Other than I'll say, you know, we did that live episode Last weekend at the climate for climate, the running kind I was very impressed by how well it was run The people, the camaraderie Just struck me as a really cool thing The trail running community And I'm, you know, I'm used to my

[00:20:36] The vast majority of my life I've been going to competitive events as a competitor And I just saw a different, you know, type of, uh, you know, competitor and sportsmanship at that event So it was very nice to see that and wish them the success And as we pointed out in the last episode They're doing, what is it? A hundred K? Yeah Or a hundred mile Which, which is it? A hundred K or a hundred mile? A hundred mile A hundred mile running event in the Catskills

[00:21:05] It's coming to you next year Stosh is in training starting now Todd's in training That's not, Stosh is not in training Yeah, Todd Bold who went from trail hiker to trail runner Somewhere on in the Bel Air ski area with his 25 liter backpack Yeah, yeah And he had a pretty considerable amount of weight on there So he told me what he finished He finished a top 10 out of 36 So, wow, that's very impressive

[00:21:34] Yeah, yeah, he finished 10th place out of 36 people So congratulations Todd Greatly appreciate the hard siders and the IPAs And yeah, awesome job So, let's move on to the amazing monthly supporters Chris Garabian, Eric Rosario, Scott O'Nichols, John Comiskey, Mike ES, Desert City Radio, Henry Burmeister, Vicky Ferreira, Jeff Jotz, David Aller, Betsy A, Denise W, Vanessa, and Jim C

[00:22:03] Thank you guys so much for supporting the show Greatly appreciate it Once again, I love that you're doing this This keeps us keep going And such And, you know, it just goes right back in the Catskills You know, I don't, I don't, I don't want the money I don't need the money I just do this for the frickin' love and the great commodity we have here in the Catskills And then, also we have our amazing sponsors of the show like Outdoor Chronicles Photography

[00:22:32] Molly from Outdoor Chronicles Photography Specializes in adventure elopement and adventure couple photography in the Catskills, Adirondack, and White Mountains She's an officiant for getting married, a licensed guide, but most important She's a story maker Molly won't just give you photos, she'll give you memories that will last forever Don't hesitate to get a hold of Molly on all platforms We're gonna have Molly come on in a couple weeks, or maybe a month or so, after she's done busy So that'll be some fun of hearing her recent story She hasn't been on in a long time

[00:23:02] So, it'll be great to hear from her, great sponsor Also, have you ever wanted to learn more about hiking or backpacking Or even just brush up on some of your old skills in the backcountry? Check out Trail Bomb Project, a hiking and backpacking school Scott and Joe from New Jersey Search and Rescue Team have amazing backgrounds from Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, and the Mountain Rescue Association And they are there to teach you old and new skills of hiking and backpacking

[00:23:27] They teach anything from first aid, map and compass, and many other skills that can help you and others while on the trail Check them out on their website and all social media platforms I'm thinking about bringing Scott and Joe back on to talk about Trail Bomb Project I mean, they've just blossomed from To this amazing organization that is just doing so much stuff So, gonna bring them out here somehow We'll get a hold of them soon We'll get a hold of Ryan, we'll get a hold of everybody Freaking have everybody back on here

[00:23:57] All our sponsors and stuff We should We got to do our Live outdoor show on a Saturday afternoon at some community park up in the Catskills You can have them all there We'll just do it at Hunter Mountain We'll take over Hunter Mountain Or Bel Air Like a cool venue Yeah, I'm really like I said in the beginning of the episode I'm really surprised that the state let them do that They must have said like you, you gotta pay like $10,000 for this

[00:24:24] And then I guarantee Amy was just like this is a rescue Like there's gonna be a lot of rescues here We don't have to pay And they're like yeah, that's fine If there's rescues, you don't have to pay Yeah, well, you know, you say that in jest and in seriousness As far as we know, there were no rescues Right It was a very safely, well-run event And Amy did mention when you interviewed her that she was out the day before You know, clearing the trail, making sure everything was in order

[00:24:52] So kudos to her to doing that and taking all that seriously And running an event for trail running, which can be dangerous Definitely Yeah, apparently, obviously, you know, there are people rolled ankles and did things like that That's inevitable But you know, it wasn't as if the helicopter showed up to take anybody out of there They were ready to go though Yeah, and as Todd Bold will tell you, you can start off as a hiker and end up as a trail runner Nice

[00:25:22] On one Sunday afternoon, not bad, or morning, so Yeah, so speaking of Todd Bold, what did he get you? Oh, so I have, so he got me some industrial arts IPAs and some Paradox Brewery IPAs And so that's what I'm having tonight is the Paradox It comes in at a medium weight of 6.0 alcohol by volume

[00:25:51] But it's a very drinkable, smooth, um Nothing really stands out about it I think the beer on the one hand is an IPA But on the other hand, yeah, I can just see This is an afternoon beer that you could If you want to drink three or four of them, you could probably drink three or four of them and not bother you Not that I have, I, you know, I still have some that he gave me Nice Not for long, Todd

[00:26:21] Yeah, right Yeah, I'll need a resupply soon, if you know what I'm saying Nice What was it again? Industrial arts? No, this is the Paradox IPA I'm sorry You know, some of them have fancy cans and things like this and this is kind of basic And that's kind of like the taste is just smooth and good New England style Indian pale ale Nice

[00:26:50] Yeah Yeah So, as you asked before I interrupted you, I'm having a 1911 Sweet Apple Hard Cider That is brought to you by Chris Olula I got to get that name correct So, Chris Olula did three hard ciders to us and said, recently started listening to the podcast and loving it Thanks to both of you for some great laughs

[00:27:20] Try Skumpy Ewe Cider in West Fulton on the long path and Orchard Hill Cider in New Hampton almost on the long path for some good cider So, Chris Olula, thank you so much, really appreciate the three hard ciders Once again, if you think we're doing a good job and you want to support us, buy us a coffee or a hard cider on buymeacoffee.com Greatly appreciate it. It'll go us to us getting a hard cider for the show and then the rest will go back into the Catskills to support the Catskills

[00:27:49] So, we got to figure out what we're going to donate to next So, ah, what is next Tad? Are you really outdoors? So, mention the podcast and one of your hikes through social media and we'll chat about it in the show Tag us by typing at ITL Catskill MTM Podcast

[00:28:10] Now, this is a long one because the last time we did this was a Sunday and then everybody tagged us that Sunday and the Monday and stuff So, there's a long list which is amazing So, first off, want to give a big shout out to Shayna, aka Shay315x is now a 46-er Congratulations Shayna, she did her 46 on Colden and finished it up

[00:28:37] So, yeah, kudos to her, man. That's, you know, a lot of hiking, a lot of determination A lot of hours on the trail to finish that off. So, I'm very happy for her I totally agree. So, big shout out to Shayna Once again, thank you for tagging the show. It's great to hear your journey and stuff Also, Jacqueline, Yama and Yarrow did a Climate for Climate run and did the 25K

[00:29:01] So, it was great meeting her and just congratulations on doing your 25K and finishing Once again, I was looking for you. She, I think she spotted me So, it was great to see, to see him at the show Yeah, that was nice meeting her and she, apparently she runs a camp A public camp or state camp up in Vermont Oh, oh, do you remember? Yeah, she said that. Yeah, she mentioned that

[00:29:31] That's what I gathered from what she said and it sounds like a pretty cool job So, kudos to her to, you know, hooking up with the job that is right in the territory of what you love to do Yes, I agree. And I will look that up and tag it in the show if anybody wants to go there for when they're headed up to Vermont So, great once again, the Climate for Climate run was a big success and we saw Todd Bold out there

[00:29:58] He did as a, as a, as a hiker and finished as a runner and did 10th place, 36th So, congratulations Todd and thank you for the hard-siders and the IPAs That did well with the interviews and stuff like that You know, he was part of the, he was a big part of the show actually He was there almost the whole time Yeah, it was, it was fantastic to have him there

[00:30:20] He was just chatting away about different things, you know, once again, it was cool to have just random people show up and interview It was fun And she, and Val, speaking of that, Val goes hiking, was also on the Climate for Climate run, did the 25k run So, she did very well on that, so it was good to hear from her Moving on, Tony, TJi72 was out exploring the Catskills on Beautiful Days

[00:30:49] We have, of course, Catskill Mountain, Bruce Scott Finished up his trip in the Adirondacks by doing Baxter and Big Crow Now listen to the stats Finished the week at 121 miles and 34,000 feet of elevation gain and hiking So why isn't he doing the fastest known time on the long path? You know? Yeah, I mean, you know, that's like, he's almost there It feels like it, right?

[00:31:16] Yeah, yeah, he's like, maybe next summer we should get him a crew of people and he can do the, you know, uh, no, actually, we're not gonna get him a crew And he should do unsupported the long path, like chicken fat, Chris chicken fat Yeah, I, I think that would be a great talking point And chicken fat, he could learn a lot from chicken fat Yeah, and, and we'll, he'll have to learn how to sleep in a, um, you know, one of those porta potties

[00:31:46] I can't imagine that's that hard to do And then Scott can come on the show when he's all done Yeah, I Okay, Scott, so we planned out summer 2027 for you Keep hiking Yeah, as he did He did then Did South Double Top and Big Indian for, uh, with beautiful chest high nettles And then the next day did Balsam and Eagle with his new buddy Finn, AKA Panzer So, he's out there killing it As well as in Kate, Henderson Hikes did Marshall with Scott

[00:32:15] And did her first Summit Red Bull on Marshall Uh, so she pounded that down and then probably had some freaking goddamn energy to sprint down the mountain So, and then finished with Shana and Colden for her 46th or finish So, it's good to see everybody together and to, to doing this stuff together Yeah, and this time last year, Kate was, uh, held up with her leg in a cast

[00:32:42] Recovering from that trimal fracture that she had with the surgery So, it's glad to see that she's out just crushing some mega now Yeah, definitely A lot of people are, it's crazy, it's great to see It's summer Yeah, I got, yeah, you gotta, yeah, you gotta You gotta nail those out Especially now, as I'm starting to see some leaves changing Which is, I hate to say that But, um, John, foolish not stupid did the eastern part of Devil's Path

[00:33:10] Uh, and with Freddie even got some Summit Naps Uh, at the top and then went to South Double Top, beginning in fur with Zorro and Scott as well So, he's nailing off I'm pretty sure John is gonna be doing Uh, on the 7th of Labor Day is gonna be doing Cheryl in North Dome for his single season One of his single season, unfortunately I am stuck in by corporation shit And I, I won't be able to join

[00:33:39] But, if you're able to join Get a hold of Scott Or John foolish not stupid cats come out and brew And, and make this a goddamn 40 person trail party With running crews and aid stations and stuff like that So, just set it up and it'll be good Um, Kelsey Hiker Yogi Was stewarding at Balsam Lake Mountain So, thank you once again, Kelsey for volunteering Sam, aka SMDean9890

[00:34:07] Had the mountain alter herself for sunrise I'm pretty sure this was a God Giant ledge I forgot what it was, sorry Yeah, it was, wasn't it? I didn't see the post Ha ha, shit Sorry Sam If I follow him Sorry Sam, I really, I'm really sorry Often there's a wood Sean was at Red Hill Uh, hiker Joe NY was up in Baxter State Park, Maine And did Hamlin Peak and also did North Brother

[00:34:36] To tack more off the main high peaks Uh, Joe did several more I didn't get those tags, so I really apologize, Joe But you are up there killing it in Maine Yeah I'm pretty sure he's pushing it up to like Number eight or nine Uh, once Joe gets around, man Yeah Yeah From the western New York up to, to Maine I, I'm, I'm very curious of like the, the next week

[00:35:06] Is just like, where the hell is Joe gonna be this week? It's like, is it gonna be in Catskills, Adirondacks? Yeah. And I'll say this, if you're looking for some interesting music Um, his stories always have interesting music that goes with his, uh, the videos he, he takes True. Check him out, check him out more for the video More than just for the video Some good tunes there True, true True, true

[00:35:33] So yeah, um, Sam, uh, Sam, S.M. Dean, 89890 again, was in Chest High Nettles on Hawkett So Hawkett, whatever you wanna call it, Hawkett I saw that, uh, uh, what's his name? Mike Schutte? Yes. Jesus, I'm sorry, Mike He wrote like Hawkett, Hawkot Like four different names on the, on the thing Oh yeah Yeah, it was, it was great because it's just I gotta admit a lot of people, locals say it differently

[00:36:03] We say it differently, stuff like that What's your, Hawkett? Hawkett, yeah Hawkett, okay If you have any doubt on what it's called, just call the, uh, Hawkett Town Hall And the town clerk will make sure you say it correctly Okay? That's like the official pronunciation Is by calling, and I, we'll look up the number, it's like 1518 something Hawkett Nice Okay

[00:36:28] And, and by the way, Mike Schutte is, uh, I think he had knee surgery recently So he hasn't been hiking So wish him well, hope he gets out there soon And maybe this should be a reminder to make sure that you don't leave blank pages in the sign-in blog books Um, I see that all the time where people will not sign on the back side of the page You'll just flip it over and go to the next page And they're, they're arguably only using half the book

[00:36:56] So, try to make sure you, you flip over the page Get out, sign in on the back side Make Mike and Jim's jobs easier Correct, correct So once again, thank you guys for, for your volunteering and stuff like that Uh, Jim C was out with the Catskill Trail Joe Cleared Cleaning out his new section of trail on Millbrook Ridge Uh, once again, congratulations Jim C on your, uh, volunteering trail And thank you for volunteering Really appreciate it

[00:37:25] Joe, J.K. Plough was listening to the latest episode while paddling on the Shroom River Then crossed Baxter and Big Crow on his Lake Placid Niner list So, cool Definitely, definitely Kelsey Hiker Yogi and Mikey S led a group to fly in Bearpen Uh, and Kelsey, she is now closed out for her seasons So congratulations, Kelsey Ripping it up

[00:37:50] Tracy Pinkpony18 took her tutu out and celebrated her birthday by doing Poets Les on extremely humid day Which she doesn't regret And she finds that that, that area going up to Poets Les is extremely crazy Not steep, but continuous steepness Doesn't stop Yeah, that's a good climb Uh, there's some I'm gonna say there's some great lookouts there

[00:38:18] Um, and I'm not sure that I would on a humid day hike it in a tutu How about you, Stash? Would you? Uh, if you paid me Yeah, so you have a tutu then I mean, you just want, you would want to be paid to wear it, but you already have the tutu I do That's all right, let's just move on We don't need to know I mean, that would really, I mean Yeah Yeah, I mean that's, that's a little personal information Yeah, it is All right, let it out of this All right, yeah

[00:38:46] Okay, moving on to Brownski Brownski, did a nice paddle on the Hudson Went from one side to the other Went from west, or east to west So it was cool to see that Uh, Vicky, hiker goddess adventures Was up in the whites doing the Prezi traverse With a bunch of ladies, but ran into some crazy weather And unfortunately had to exit off I saw some of her videos And I agree Yeah Even though that I kind of would have moved on

[00:39:15] Because I love that kind of weather Well, you have the Hallie Hansen jacket She does too Oh yeah? Okay Yeah, but not the others do But I gotta admit, 70 mile per hour winds are definitely tough To navigate in Especially in the whites when you Have the Karens set up And Yeah I Don't know if I would be as confident with myself And with others Being up in the whites with 70 mile per hour winds But I would love to experience that Yeah, well

[00:39:45] It's really tiring to be in wind like that You know? I mean, it really makes No matter what direction the wind is hitting you from If it's hitting you from the back If it's hitting you from the front or the side It really makes walking a challenge Especially when the wind starts to pulsate Or change direction a little bit You know, you're more prone to losing your balance Falling down can be harder Because you've got the wind forcing you down at times

[00:40:15] Yeah, so When you're up there like that And you can pull the ripcord And I'm gonna use the term bailout I don't think it's being insensitive to say that But yeah, bailout That's the right thing to do Correct, correct If there are You know, once again you have a group And someone's not feeling Great Or someone's not feeling it Definitely You gotta bail out because it's just Number one that person's not feeling it And you know, it could become A situation later on

[00:40:44] But also, you know That I gotta admit the Prezi You need to experience that with beautiful views It's just something else Well, you know, or ferocious conditions I mean, you know, it's like the whole spectrum of flavors But yeah, and I'm not, you know We can't say that the reason that they Pulled the ripcord was because Somebody in the group wasn't, you know, feeling up to it It just might have been a time of day thing for them That they were moving slower, you know

[00:41:13] They, their ETA at the destination was, you know Beyond the target So, time to turn around Save it for another day Hell yeah, save it for another day Let us know when you're going up again I might be joining you because I gotta do the Prezi Traverse again And Ted's gotta do it as well Yeah, I'm down for it And speaking of being up in New Hampshire Lisa Chaotic Cazotic was with Kat Her sister up in New Hampshire

[00:41:41] And summited Lafayette after getting a speeding ticket in Vermont And visiting her first hut So, congratulations, Lisa On getting your first speeding ticket in Vermont I'm guessing it was one of those Good old 40 mile per hour Freaking highways shit That Vermont gives you I hate that shit Yeah, usually You enter into a new speed zone You're like in a 55 And there's the reduction to 45 or 35 And then the cop car

[00:42:10] Is right there Well, no, they're hidden behind a barn Alongside of the road All the time I used, in my skiing days I would encounter these speed traps up there all the time And it's right when You can be going 90 miles an hour in a 55 And there's no cops out there But when the speed goes from 55 Down to 45 or 35 or something Guaranteed There's a Vermont State Police Officer

[00:42:40] At the next like hidden spot To capture you, right? And they're off making maple syrup And catching you and tagging you In the winter, it's like they get all the skiers Rushing to the mountain in the morning Yeah, they just line them up on the side of the road It should be a fucking crime To do that to people out having a good time Okay, why don't you get people ripping off like Welfare benefits or something, you know Hurting the needy or something Arrest them, but people that are out

[00:43:09] Having a good time, recreating Having good clean fun, leave us alone Okay? Correct. Yeah, the state of Vermont should send A hundred dollars for her inconvenience Okay? And emotional trauma I'm just throwing that out there Okay? Yeah, Lisa follow up on the bill I want to see the bill Let us know what they charge you And then we're going to, instead of Occupy South Double Top Occupy Vermont, okay?

[00:43:38] Correct. I like it. I like it Moving on, Jeff Jotts and Orla went to Farne State Park And Orla loves the water I love watching Orla's stuff And jumping in the water I love it Rich, Richie's Nature Escape Did the Cranberry Lake 50 Cool to see his progress on the Cranberry Lake 50 He's a good backpacker So he loves doing that stuff And last but not least, Christy A.K.A. Cam1863 Was enjoying the stunning view

[00:44:07] At Huckleberry Point Tad, how many tags? 23 23 Awesome to hear Great community Keep tagging us in the podcast We'll chat about it on the show I appreciate it Once again, thank you Chris Sula for this coffee You can buy us a coffee Slash hard cider on buymeacoffee.com So how about Tad, your previous hike

[00:44:36] Hikes Hikes Yeah, so Now that I can't ride a bicycle I generally go walking Every day And Saturday and Sunday I've been hitting up Mohonk Minnewasca The Schwangunk Ridge And you know, it started off as Like the Under cliff Over cliff hike Which was just inside of five miles And over the course of a few weeks

[00:45:06] I've been able to bump that up To Saturday I entered The Mohonk Preserve I won't say where I entered Because it's kind of a cool parking spot For local people But I was able to Get over to the mountain house Which is a very scenic Charming area It almost is like being in a foreign country It has like this kind of Swiss Feel to it If you will But there was a lot of rising fog

[00:45:34] So the, you know, the views weren't Great But being in the woods was great So Saturday I was able to bang out 9.10 miles About 1200 vertical feet of gain And then Sunday I went back for a little more To 10 miles And 940 feet of gain I'm a little surprised by that Because I thought I was I got more vertical in on Sunday But the The data showed different And the one thing

[00:46:02] That I discovered on Saturday That I forgot to do on Sunday Is mosquitoes They're like fully mature They're hungry for blood And When you have a bum arm And can't like wave them away With both arms You really need bug spray So Hopefully I'll remember to have that With me this coming weekend I'm still not I'm still not at the point Where I can carry a backpack

[00:46:31] So I just have like a sling I carry my water bottle in But maybe I'll remind myself To spray up At the car And then head out This weekend So It was great It was fun Got some great photos Stosh, what have you been up to? You know, I just want to Tell you that your photos were fantastic And that place, like you said Offers kind of like a Swiss vibe It does It's Definitely I'm sorry to say for the rich

[00:47:01] Basically like the Swiss Well I'll never go up to Switzerland Because their chocolate costs like Yeah Yeah Per like Hand finger section Yeah, so You know, the mountain house itself Yes It is expensive To stay at the mountain house But to hike If you have a A preserve permit To hike their lands As part of your permit A day permit Is I think 10 to 35 dollars

[00:47:31] Depending where you enter But You know I I used to hike the Catskills I mean not the Catskills The ridge Mohawk Minnewasca Awassing The Schwangunks Quite a bit Through 2016 With my daughters And then The latter years With Sophronia And then Sometime in 2016 We decided to go over To the Catskills And for the past 10 years I've been over the Catskills A lot

[00:47:59] And then with this injury I need to walk on You know Pretty smooth Forgiving terrain And The Schwangunk Ridge Mohawk Minnewasca Has got that So that's where I've been I've been going on weekends Toying with the idea Of getting back to the Catskills But probably not For a while So I'm going to be Banging out more miles On the ridge Maybe check out Some other places Around the area

[00:48:29] But I have to say man It You You don't get The Wilderness experience In the Schwangunks Particularly hiking On the carriage roads But You do get the views There's like Yeah Around every Yeah Around every corner There's just great views Um The whole key In my view To the The best hiking experience There is The earlier you can get in The better Because you're ahead of the crowd

[00:48:59] And You're just out there By yourself And you get You get to enjoy the place Um A lot more At least in my My perspective So I'll be back there Probably Uh Sunday I got something Going on with my daughter On Saturday But Sunday I should be back Yeah Yeah Yeah Maybe I'll sneak in Maybe I'll sneak in An IPA What do you think? Sounds good Is this like Will you Are you

[00:49:28] Can you start doing The Downstate 28 Challenge with this? Is that Is that a little bit More difficult? Well Yeah So I had my first physical therapy session this week With a real therapist As opposed to home therapy Where you do kind of lame things by yourself And About 25 minutes of my half hour session Was Telling me Not to be too aggressive With Therapy and rehabilitation It takes A Really Fucking long time

[00:49:59] And Um He Kind of Poured Ice cold water On my ambitions Of Getting back to Catskill hiking Soon So I'm Continue To Be sidelined From Getting Getting to the Boreal areas And Exploring over there But you know In the meantime I'm gonna have fun in the gunks I'm grateful for what I can do And what I got to do it with So I'll just do it one hike at a time

[00:50:29] And eventually I'll either Uh Win the lottery Or Get back to hiking the Catskills One or the other So I don't know which will be first I I think you'll be back in the Catskills first Yeah, well if I'm not I'm gonna get fired from the podcast And you know Who knows what you're You're gonna get to replace me Teeth quite Teeth won't be fired from here So Uh So yeah I asked recently I What did I do over the weekend? Uh I

[00:50:58] Went to What is it? We went to a Sunflower farm Over in Scaheri Right outside of Cobleskill Jessica and I And picked I don't know how many flowers Uh They had everything that you could pick Dahlias Cosmos Sunflowers And stuff Saw an amazing sunset And then Sunday I frickin' took it easy Because it was on and off Pouring rain Where I was and such Uh But Tuesday I Had to There was a problem with my car

[00:51:28] With the trunk Got off a line So the trunk was sticking up So I had to go to Albany Uh They fixed it In like 45 minutes I came back And I'm like you know what? I have time I'm gonna frickin' go hike Bramley Of course Right 30 minutes away Got up there As I was going over this one spot You can you can see Bramley You can see the fire tower From this one spot And I could barely see it Because it was engulfed in rain But as I got over there The rain passed

[00:51:57] And I was able to hike up In beautiful weather It was awesome at the top Uh Got Really humid with the sun Uh Once again Bramley is I just went up to the fire tower road And back Is only like 3.5 miles With 900 feet of gain Still a decent amount of gain Um But Uh I got up there In the fastest known time Of my times The 31 minutes So I

[00:52:26] I thought I did pretty well And I had that This This I had to chat with this lady Because she chatted with me I'm like listen I'm trying to get under here In 30 minutes Like shut the hell up And let me get going I'm just kidding I'm just kidding Uh But I got up Enjoyed the views And then I was looking over to like the The northwest And I was just like Those look like Like rain showers I'm just like Look at the radar And I'm like I got about 20 minutes So I'm gonna head down I freaking

[00:52:55] Sprint down Actually no I didn't I Glided down Let's just say And it was a beautiful day Got in the car Not even a quarter way down the mountain Starts pouring rain Like vicious pouring rain And I beat it It was one of those days Of where it was just Scattered On and off showers Of everywhere It was just There was a pocket here Of beautiful weather And there was Like a

[00:53:25] Of showers somewhere And then Pocket here Of a beautiful weather It was just It was just one of those crazy Cool Summer days That you totally appreciate And you're just like God damn this is summer This is Really summer And Off in the distance Right now the fireworks are going off I don't know if you can fucking hear that The fireworks are going off in the background For the baseball park that we have Yeah It is annoying As fuck It's not bad

[00:53:55] Do you always hear things like this Dosh? I I do Every Is this like a recent thing that started happening with you? No Was it after you ate the mushrooms you found on the trail? Every Every five days this happens So it's really weird here So But anyway Beautiful day I got to see I saw slide mountain and panther engulfed in rain And then appear Really cool

[00:54:25] My most recent hike And it was a beautiful good old Bramley Never disappoints I will tell you Yeah Good for you buddy Yeah Glad you got out Yeah Those unexpected hikes are the best I mean my hike on Sunday was that way I was the weather All week was calling for early rain on Sunday And I woke up and The storms were Were blowing to the east So I mean we had gotten rain overnight But The one thing about Uh

[00:54:55] Minnewasca And Mohonk Is the carriage roads Are about as Groomed Groomed trails Or roads Can get You can literally take a baby stroller down them And so they drain really well Rarely if ever Do you find mud spots or Puddling of water So They They rebound really fast after a Light storm or You know a Typical summer storm obviously You know big down Torrential downpour

[00:55:25] Something would be different But Yeah I got out there and The weather Wasn't a factor For the rest of the day Those pictures look fantastic I'm just glad you're getting out Ted I'm glad you're Yeah Getting out into the wilderness It doesn't matter if it's the Catskills or not You're enjoying Yeah Well I'm looking forward to Maybe in the next month I can actually hop on a bicycle And do some Rail trail riding Paved rail trails But Yeah I'll take it You know Okay hell yeah

[00:55:54] I'm kind of like you know Going stir crazy Sitting around Talking on podcasts Ha! I knew that was coming up I knew it About things I used to do Correct You'll be back there Stop whining You know freaking Kate Was out there with a Goddamn couldn't walk So Suck it up buttercup Yeah I mean not not really But good good Glad you're getting back out You know once again Glad everybody's getting back out Yeah it looks like Everybody had a great summer You know especially

[00:56:23] It's not ending Stop saying don't say that Oh come on this is like you know You've got Well I mean you look at school kids And parents that have kids Correct And people that work in the Educational field The end of summer for them Is here So But you know the best part about the Best part about the end of summer Is fall Right It's right on its heels And fall's a great time of year Whether you're a hiker Or you're not a hiker It's a great time of year

[00:56:53] And you know In part means the end of humidity It means the end of bug season You know you're now in fall Colors You know there's just a lot to be said for fall Yeah We got it Yeah and then the question is When winter rolls around The question then becomes Are you really A hiker Okay Correct You know not to put anybody down But you know if you're really a hiker You grab your spikes and snow shears And your winter gear

[00:57:23] And you're out there In the winter Keep it going Yeah So we look forward to anything And everything Yep So Speaking of that If you look forward to stuff Volunteer 3500 Club Catskill Trail Crew Catskill Mountain Club Visitor Center Jolly Railways Trail Crew Brimley Mountain Fire Tower And if you need stickers Contact me I will send them to you For free ASAP Or go to Camp Catskill And get your free stickers

[00:57:53] Also Catskill CP SAR And the Catskill 3500 Club The Catskill Preventative Search and Rescue Team Is doing a wilderness first aid training On November 7th 2026 At 9am To November 8th 2026 5pm Catskill Forest Association At Arkville Let me know if you want to participate I will get you An email that can hook you up

[00:58:21] And I think it's like 200 something dollars 226 dollars So Pretty cool once again To learn these skills While out on the trail Because To be honest As a search and rescue volunteer There are some things That I did not know about Before I was a search and rescue volunteer That I did wilderness first aid That I did wilderness first aid That I did wilderness first responder stuff That you can learn in these Trainings

[00:58:49] That will definitely help You Feel comfortable Somewhat I would say On the trail And for you to help the person While out on the trail To make you both feel comfortable In these types of situations Because once again We always bring it back to Kate Like Kate had this problem But you know They had people there You know Danny, Sean, Joanne That helped her out That kept her calm

[00:59:19] They all knew this stuff They all had This knowledge That kept her calm Kept them calm That kept them confident That they can Call for help And get this rescue Under underway So You never know So It's a great course to do So I might be in on that So I gotta I gotta check out Where my wilderness first aid is at Yeah Maybe I'll sign up as well Because of my hiking limitations Maybe I can

[00:59:49] Do wilderness first aid instead Yeah So check it out If you need Once again an email I'll send you out an email And then I'll get you hooked up So How about we break it into the Inaccurate Weather forecast For the Catskills Here is your weekend Weather forecast It looks to be a great weekend To get out and bag some peaks And maybe check out Those occasional viewpoints

[01:02:43] Seven hours There are seven days Seven hours Seven hours and 59 minutes On 358 miles Long path Now I don't know This is like the I don't know, Ted How many long path people We've had on here? It's been a couple Yeah, so we had Kim Levinsky And we had Chris Chicken Fat Chicken Fat Chris LeBlanc Yeah And also Now we have

[01:03:13] Kumi tonight Who crushed both of those Frickin' records Which is insane And we have her husband Glenn Redpath here tonight As well So we're gonna get both perspectives From Kumi Who was on first hand And then Glenn Who was the coach Am I correct, Glenn? More like a crew member Crew member Okay, okay That's that But welcome to the show guys Good to have you here Thank you so much for having us tonight Yeah, can't wait to hear this story Cause you know Hearing about the long path The long path is amazing

[01:03:44] Just one of the most stunning features In New York State That people must and should enjoy Not in seven days though That's That's Crazy It's hardly enjoyable She threw fluid She probably forgot Some of the places That she visited Cause she was like Hi, bye That's the way it is But hey, Kumi How about you give a little Background about yourself You know You can go as far as you want Dig deep as far as you want So I consider us

[01:04:15] Uchitra runner And specialize Long distance And also Mountains So I run over Usually run Over a hundred miles Races And do like A multi-day Race You do You do multi-day races Like at Like night and stuff Like you camp and stuff Or is it just Just on and going Yourself running Fast as you can So those races

[01:04:44] Call stage races But I haven't done Stage races yet But I just run Like let's say 200 miles The I originally Ran Bigfoot 200 Which is Go through Cascade mountains And You just gonna Do one push If you're If you're gonna take a nap You can take a nap On the trail It's called dirt Now And But You just gonna do Just one push

[01:05:13] And finish So you're not gonna You're not bringing Any gear to To camp with Or You're not even bringing A sleeping bag You might Catch a half hour Or 45 minutes Here or there If anything You're just gonna try to run through Is that what I'm hearing? So we don't have to carry any Sleeping gears With us But Summit Station Has Eight Sleep stations And Which Okay They have a

[01:05:42] Sleeping car Like some Blanket But mostly Runners have a crew And follow Them And Provide all Nutrition So like I slept in a car And Whenever I wanted to So Yeah, that's how we Run the race Okay At the Bigfoot There was

[01:06:12] Eight Crewable aid stations So eight different times Throughout 200 miles I could meet her So those were You know, not They're not like every five miles But it was like every 17 or 18 miles I could meet her Wow Wow So Kumi I can kind of tell by your accent You're not 100% American Is that correct? What So Where Were you back? Where are you from?

[01:06:42] I was generally from Japan Did you like hike And run in Japan Before Like all this Or This is the interesting story About me That I never ran Or hike Or anything In Japan So I literally Started to run In 2012 Or something And then Before that I was totally Indoor person You know I didn't touch trees I don't like the You know Being outside But all of a sudden

[01:07:11] Running changed my life Hmm Yeah What was your first run Like you know Out in the wilderness Or your first hike Even So My first hike Was actually In the Borough's Ranch In Catskills In winter Nice And We couldn't find a trail And We literally Like a sapper At the end I couldn't You know Getting dirt And

[01:07:41] So that was my first experience In the Catskills How long ago Was that Kumi? 2020 2020 Oh Okay Wow Glenn Glenn did you force her to do that? I did Yes You see I did And like What were your thoughts Kumi when you did it In the winter Nonetheless So At the beginning Like You know At the time We're still dating And

[01:08:10] I kind of thought Oh I met the crazy guy And I have to think about my life as well But On the other hand I kind of thought Oh this Is really amazing To see like A different Like a nature Mountains Like Atmospheres Like ecosystem Then I really love it Like especially in winter Literally when we Got to the slide But Like at the slide It's Completely White

[01:08:39] No colors there I really Like It's totally fucked So you Were you an Active Like Gym rat Or Indoor runner Before This excursion Up the Burroughs range In November 2020 Even when I don't go to the gym Or anything Usually Like I just run Whenever I want Okay So I don't have any particular Training plans

[01:09:09] Neither So what's What's the trajectory Or the path That you follow In life From this hike On the Burroughs range To Doing the long path In seven days Seven hours And 59 minutes What When do you ramp up To doing these endurance events And what eventually And what eventually Gets you to the long path So Originally I was just A road Runner And

[01:09:39] My goal Was To run Boston Marathon And at some point I ran the Boston Marathon But I knew I can't run faster Than Like a BQ Anymore And then I Didn't enjoy much Running on the road So then my friend Introduced me To run like Longer distance Like She was talking About 50 miles And I was like I didn't know anything About trail running Or like a Longer than

[01:10:08] Marathon And I was like She I thought she was crazy And that was Happening In Bear Mountain We Have a race Used to call What's it called The No space In Endurance Challenge And Then I Learned So many Different Longer distance Exists Mostly In trail And then I Started to run Trails Which

[01:10:38] Was Actually The long path That's because Long path Stretched From George Washington Bridge To New Jersey And It was Really Accessible For me To run Like For weekend Just run 20 miles Like Out and Back That was the Beginning Of The My Career And Then Like You know If you run 50 miler Then You know People are Crazy Oh

[01:11:08] I can run Longer than That And I Start Running A little Bit Longer And Longer Than When I Realized I Run 100 Mile And Then COVID Happened And We're Kind of Bored Out of Mind And We're Talking About Oh There's A trail Here A trail There And We Learn Trail Called Empire State Trail The Empire I think That's Up North Right Above Rochester And Stuff

[01:11:38] It's Literally Start Buffalo To Albany The One Goes To Buffalo But The Other Ones Just Start From The Border Between Canada Oh Wow And The U.S. Side The New York And Finish In The Battery Park In New York Wow So That Sounds Interesting When We Did Run And We Went Actually A trail But It

[01:12:07] Was Kind of Like A Bike Path And The Paid So I Was Not Very Interested And About This And That And I Also Always Interested Running Long Distance Like It's Not Going To Be Ideal Like Realistic But I Was Always Thinking About To Do Like A Trans Con

[01:12:37] Or Those Kind of Things But I Did Not Have Any Confidence Or Any Experience Or Anything So I Was Like How I Can Do This And Then Like At The Same Time The Race Go Kokoruna 250 Which Is Very Popular Race Right Now And Kokoruna Was Live

[01:13:06] Streamed On YouTube And Everyone Watched It Everyone Loved It And Then One Day I Was Like I Want To Run This Race I Can Do This But I Didn't Sign Up And Next Year My Friend Ran Kokoruna And I Was Like Oh She's Doing Great She Can Do It So Maybe I Can Do It And I

[01:13:46] Didn't I Run Kokoruna Which Was 250 Mile Jesus That Was The Beginning Of That Like Multi Day And So I Kind Of Literally Thinking About To Do Like A Long Path But Still It's Just

[01:14:16] Pocket List Yet And Then I Kind Of Experienced A Little Bit More And Then One Day That Was Last Year We I Got I Turned 50 And Thinking About What Are Going To Do It's A 50 Half Century So Then You Know He Was He Turned 60 Last Year

[01:14:46] He Wanted To Do Something Party But I Don't Want To Get Have A Party Or Something So Then I Was Like Instead Of Having A Big Party Maybe I Can Do Something Else And Return To Society Or Community And Then Everything The Dot Links To The Line Okay This Is

[01:15:16] Story To Get To The Long Path And That Was In 2025 Your First Attempt So That Was 2020 Yes Okay So How'd That Work Out It's 2025 You're Going To Do An Attempt To Do The Fastest Known Time On The Long Path What Time Of Year Do You Start Out So I Started In Actually November November That Was Huge Mistake And I Kind Of

[01:15:46] Thought It's Like Weather Was Might Be Better Than Like Somehow I Look It Up The Previous Runners Like I Analyze Everyone Everyone's Run And Kim Did It In Summer Adam Did It Summer Everyone Runs Summer But I Have Confident I Can Run In Summer So I Have To Avoid Running In Summer

[01:16:16] Either Spring Or November But My Birthday Was In July And Aiming To Do Is Probably Like Not Following Next Year But In That Year So That Was That That's Why Okay So I'm Going To In November Sure What What What Happened What Problems Did You Run Into In November I'm Guessing It Wasn't

[01:16:45] The Prettiest Time Of Your Life So The Biggest Mistake Was Not The Running But So I Would Say Under The Under The Preparation And I Didn't Have Enough Communication With Crews And Pacers And I Didn't Have Like Enough Human Resources To Do

[01:17:15] It Wow That's That's Pretty Odd To Say In November So What Were Your Human Resources Then In November 2025 How Many People Were Involved Was It Just Glenn Or More Than Glenn She Wasn't There Glenn Was Off Partying For His 60th First Right Right There You Wasn't There So The Big Biggest Mistake Was So

[01:17:45] Now The Current FKT Attempt When I Try He Was The Crew Chief And He Managed And Lead Everything And Coordinate Everything He Is The Responsibility For All The Coordination But At The Beginning And I Did It Year Before I Have No One To Do It But I Have A Person

[01:18:15] Every Day Someone Coming On Monday Someone Is Going To Commit On Tuesday That's It So Then There's No Even Who Is Going To Crew Me Who Space Me It Depends On The Situation We're Just Going To Decide Whenever We Face On That Day But It Didn't Work Out Of Course Because It Wasn't Enough To Organize And Do Stuff So Then You

[01:18:48] More Time To Do Like At The Eight Station It's Not The Eight Station Between The Sections I Wanted To Do This And That In Certain Time But I Can't Leave In Hours And Hours Because It's Nothing Ready So Then At Some Point So The Huge Mistake Was The Crew Well Human Resource

[01:19:18] But Also That Leads To A Huge Like Mistakes As Is That We're Heading To Mount Pesker Before Heading To Road 23 Wyndham And We Know

[01:19:48] It's Gonna Be Just A Couple Hours Of Run Or Hike And We Don't Need A Lot Of Lights But We Got Lost And It's Getting Dirt And Then We Realize Our Headlump It's Not Working Oh We Have A Light But We Have We Only Have A One Light That Was Actually Borrowed From One

[01:20:18] Of Cruise So We Don't Know How How Long The Headlump Lost Or How Strong It Is So We Can't Heavily Rely On That Headlump So We Have To Save The Light Barrett To Go Through The Mountains But It Was In November Even Pesk It's Not Very High Mountain I Think It's Just A 2500 Or So But Still It Was Really Cold

[01:20:47] And When I Try FKT Last Time The Weather Was Actually Very Bad It's Rain Storm Head It Was Snowing In The Middle Somewhere And It Was Windy So We Started To Like Hypothemia As Well Wow So Then You Know We Literally Walk Around To

[01:21:17] Find The Trails Around Mount Pisker For Hours And Hours Although Pisker Is Not That Much Long Now It Doesn't Take So Long But It Eventually Find A Trail But It Was Not Actual Trail It's A Different Trail So We Literally Bailed From And And Then My Crew Figured Where We Are Because I Have An In Region And They

[01:21:47] Know Where We Were So Then They Pick Us Up And Then I Decided Not To Continue No So That Leads You To 2026 And You Start Your Fastest Known Time For 2020 In 2026 That Like Give You That Little Attempt In 2025 Give You Nail It That You Are Good To Go And Such So I Have To Fix

[01:22:17] Something Make It Better So Which Is Like I Need A Strong Crew Team And Which Is I Need Him And Also One Of Experienced Outdoor Person And She Is Also

[01:22:47] One Of Our Crew Team So Then I'm Kind Of Confident On it And I Kind Of Feel Oh I Can Finish If I Have Those Two But Also We Went Back To The Section 27 The Mount Pescar And See Exactly What Happened To Us How We Can Fix It How We Can Coordinate To Get Out From That Mountain

[01:23:17] So Then We Figured Out There's No Markers At The Major Turn So Then Literally New York New Jersey Trans Conference Person Went Up To The Mountain And Make The Marker And Visibly Made A Sign For The Turn Then We're Able To Follow All The Markers Since Then

[01:23:47] But Even We Don't Know Like Middle Of The Trees Were Kind Of Broke Down And No Markers So But Now I'm Confident That My Goal It's Not The Goal But Like You Know Small I Have A Small Goals That No Matter What In

[01:24:16] Certain Time So That Was My First Goal So You You Bring On Glenn And What Was That Michael Was The Other Fellow Yeah So You Have Glenn And Michael And How Many Other People Do You Recruit To Support You Wow Support Me

[01:24:46] So Six People Crewing Me And Support Glenn And Michael And Also I Have 14 Pacers Total And The Longest The Pacer Run With Me Was 85 Miles Wow One Person Rode 85 Miles That Was Oh Wow Andy Wow He

[01:25:15] Is A Beast Yeah He Was Really Good Shape Actually And I Really Appreciate I Can Rely On King Because He Is The King Of The King Of Long Path Oh Yeah It Should Be The Long Andy Garrison Path Now That's What It Should Be Named Yeah So What Do You A Camper What Are You

[01:25:45] Guys Doing For A Support Vehicle Do You Have One Vehicle A Van Or Something Yeah We Rented A Ford Transit And We Put A Double Mattress In The Back Nice I Didn't Even Do Anything Like Crazy Special For That It Was Just Like Yeah Throw The Mattress In The Back And Is That The Only Support Vehicle That You Had Dedicated To The Effort Or Was There Another Vehicle Or Two That

[01:26:15] Were Part Of This That Was The Main Vehicle Everything Else Was Pacers Driving Up For The Day Or Two Days And In Terms Of The Pre Planning For What Did You Stock The Van With Did People Bring Stuff Every Day To Resupply You Or Did You Start Off With What You Felt You Needed To Get You To The End How Did You Get All Stocked Up And Geared Up For 2026 So We

[01:26:45] Pre Bought A Lot Of Food That We Could Prepare Quickly And Michael Brought A Stove Camp Stove Table Chairs Just Stuff That We Could Just Easily Access And Then Make Food Kumi Loves Miso Soup So We Made Miso Soup We Made Rice Different Things Like Quick Stuff I Was Going To Say Kumi Were

[01:27:15] You Running And Being At The Top Of Something And Be Like I Want A Damn Burger Or Pizza Like Did Something Big Or Was It Just Plain And Simple The Whole Way So Unfortunately I'm Not A Big Fan Of Burger Or Pizza Like During The So I A Little Bit More Like To Me Like A Miso Soup Or Rice It's Kind Like A Soul Food And Easy To Eat

[01:28:09] The Vibe And In Part This Is Dasha's Question Why Is It That You're Doing This At The Long Path Why Not Something Else Other Than

[01:28:40] So I'm Kind Of Like A Very Familiar And Also You Know To Me Running Along Path Is Just Running Back To The Apartment Cascals Okay That's Pretty Cool You Know The More Time Like If I Run More It's Getting To My Apartment And It's Going Back Home

[01:29:10] And So That Was Kind Of Some Sort Of Motivation To Run As Well So Here You Are It's It's Like I Said The Beginning Of Your Second Effort What's Going Through Your Head Are You Apprehensive Are You Nervous Are You Excited Are You All These Emotions What Are You Thinking About Before You Hit The Start Button And Set Off I Was So Excited

[01:29:40] I Didn't Have Any Negative Thought Or Like Afraid Of Anything At All But What I Know Is Like I Say Like 20 People Engage To This Crazy Challenge I Have To Finish This No Matter What So Many People Take Off From You Know Took A Day Off For Me To Do This Crazy

[01:30:10] Journey And If I Quit I'm So Guilty So That's Kind Of Like Okay So I Have To Do This Not Just For Me But For Everyone And Also So Many People Following Me Which Means Like It's Good For Our Community As Well So That Was Kind Of Like A Good Like It Ended Up Bringing To Like Good

[01:30:39] Motivation And Also Like Excitement For Me To Do And Finish Shit Glenn Glenn Glenn What About You What Was Your Going Through Your Head In The Beginning Like You're The The Guy Organizing Everything Getting Everything Going So Are You Just Basically Like Yeah I Get Out Of Here We Got To Get This Thing Going Or You Just Like Oh God This Is This Is Going To Be Crazy Yeah That's A Good Answer

[01:31:09] Well I Mean So She The City So It Was Kind Of Like The Idea Of Running Home And There's All These Sections Like I Don't Know If You Realized But There's 35 Sections All Sectioned Off From Altamont All The Way Back To New City So There's All These Different Sections So We Use Those Sections As Motivators To Sort Of Like Okay Try To Get Done This Section Try To

[01:31:39] Go Through That Section And So At The Beginning It Was More And She Actually Wanted To Run The First Section Along Which Was Kind Of Cool So She And She Wanted To Start At 12 Noon Which Was Another Kind So She Wanted To Do Four Sections The First Day The First Section Along And Then We Had Three People Coming To Paste The Next Three Sections And That Was The End Of The First Day So I Think You Know We Got Up There Early We Had Enough Time To

[01:32:09] You Know Warm Up And Talk And Just It Was A Nice Day And We Befriended The Local Police One She Speaks Japanese So She Came Over And Started Speaking To Kumi In Japanese And Wishing Her Good Luck And So You Know Just A Number Of Things That Got Us Started And Then I Think She Was Off

[01:32:38] And I Think I Was I Was Excited But I Knew I Was In For A Long Week And I Really Didn't Know If She Was Going To Do It In You Know Maybe She Will Do Nine Days So There Was A Lot Of Ambiguity About How Much Time She Was Going To Be Out There But In The Beginning It's It's Pretty Straightforward And It Wasn't Like She Was Trying To Run A Certain Pace It Was Just Get To This Section Get Four

[01:33:08] Sections Done Before You Have A Bigger Sleep And The First Night Was The Longest Sleep And Probably One Of Her Longer Feeds As Far As Meal After That It Just Got Less And Less And More Pushing And Smaller Smaller Meals As We Went Through Wow Now With This Being The Start Of It And Stuff With The Communication How Are You Communicating

[01:33:38] From Your Van To Kumi And Your Pacers Like Is This Cell Phone Do You Rely On Cell Phone Service Or Do You Have Something Else To Kind Of Keep Up With Anything Like Kumi How Are You Talking With Glenn Of How You Feel And Stuff Back And Forth So I Think We Except In The Middle Of The Cat Skills We Have A Kind Of Good Cell Phone Service coverage

[01:34:08] And Like Before I Hit To Sections My Crew Or My Pacer Asked Me What I Want To Eat At The A Station And I Told My Pacer What I Want Like What Like I Want Miso Soup Or I Want Something Like This

[01:34:40] Here For Me When I Got To The Van They The Food Is Already And What Else Like Sometimes My Feet Is Kind A Little Bit Bothering And I Need To Change My Shoes Or Sox And Also I Told My Pacer I Need To Change My Shoes And They Are Ready To Change My Shoes Or Something Like At The Van And It

[01:35:09] It's We We Always Talking About Eight Station Efficiency Like If You Stay One Five Minutes Longer Eight Eight Stations It's Going To Be A Multi Day So We Have To Be Very Quick And You Know Smooth To Leave The Station I Hope You Can Be Super Comfortable So Everybody's Looking At The

[01:35:39] Watches And The Clock Looking At Times All The Time Right It's Kind Of Like Yeah Wow Wow That's Got To Be That's Got To Be Busy Busy Work And Just You Too Bad Kumi You Can't Finish That Mesa Soup You Gotta Get Going That's I Can't Live Without Food So Food Is The Most Important To Keep Moving Nutrition And Also I Always Have A Stomach Issue And

[01:36:08] So If My Stomach Issue Happens Then It's Going To Be A Huge Issue Later So I'm Trying Not To Have A Stomach Issue Which Is Kind of Impossible But I Try Not To Then I Try To Eat Something Something I Can 100% Eat So Which Actually Work Out In My Stomach My Stomach Is Kind Of Okay I Don't Like Finish That's Good That's A Positive

[01:36:40] So Now We You Started Altamont You're You're Going Up Like Thatcher And Stuff Like That Are There Any Times Throughout You Know I Would Say Throughout The Hike As Well That You Kind Of Just Blacked Out And Were Just Flying Down The Mountain Didn't Remember Anything And Then All Of A Sudden You Snap Back Into It You're Like Oh Crap Like I'm Here Let's Let's Get Going What Was That The It's An She's Going Through The Night

[01:37:10] So It's Not Like She's Taking Eight Hours Sleeps You Know She's She's Going Through The Night So She Has To Be Prepared You Know Physically But Mentally And Nutritionally Back To When She Was Coming In To See Us If It Was Hot Out She Would Want Cold Food And Ice But If It Was The Opposite If It Was Cold Out She Wanted Hot Food So It Was More More Work On Our End As As Preparing Hot Food

[01:37:40] And Just Keeping Her Warm And Making Sure She And Then It Did Rain She Got Drenched Probably On Three Different Sections And After Those Sections She Had To Do A Full Outfit Change And Dry Off And Put On All New Dry Clothes And Go Out Again

[01:38:10] So You Know It's Different Than The Summer Because The Summer You're Dealing With The Heat And The Humidity We Didn't Really Have To Deal With That But The Cold Was No Joke Like The Cold When It's Cold You Have To You Have To Put On Layers Or You Have To Get Out Of The Wet Clothes Because That's That's When Hypertheromy Can Happen Especially When You're Running And Not Walking Yeah Right You're Generating Some Perspiration So Speaking Of

[01:38:39] Changing Things At The Aid Stations I Read Somewhere Kumi That You Had Seven Or Eight Pairs Of Shoes That You Changed In And Out Of During The Course Why Don't You Tell Us About The Shoe Changes So I Have Seven Eight Pairs Something Like That So I Don't Know I Just Brought All Of The Shoes From Apartment And Whatever I Wanted We Had A Huge Bin We Just Had All Your Shoes

[01:39:09] So The Idea Is Not To Have Blisters And If I Feel Something Long Or Like Even Heat Spot I Just Gonna Change My Shoes To Different Shoes And Also Protect Cushion As Well With This Bit Like Did

[01:39:41] About Like One Or Two Different Kinds Of Model Shoes Most Pairs Are Exact The Same Just Different Colors Okay Okay I

[01:40:11] After Through Goshen And Stuff Like That You Know You Are On Bike Path Or You Are Literally On A Road So You Know You Don't Want To Be Wearing Grippy Trail Shoes For That You Want To Switch True Yeah And You Don't Need Something With Any Protection Or Minimal Protection So You We Went

[01:40:41] Through These Pretty Much Sleepless Nights When Is It That It Becomes Like In Your Mind That This Is Just Some Real Serious Work And You're Just Like Hanging On To Continue On With Your Effort When Did That Happen Before During Or

[01:41:12] And My I Got A Little Bit Injured And I Couldn't Move At All At Some Point So Then At That Point Yes It Totally Became A Work And Have To Go Through And Get Out From The Mountains But It Was Like I Would Say Physically It Was The Hurst Moment To Me And Especially

[01:41:42] Like When I Got To Where Was The Station We Got The Police Game Mount Ivy Before Hitting To Can Scale It Was Okay But When I Started To Going Up To The Can Scale I Yeah Last Circle All

[01:42:12] A Had A Huge Pain Around Hill And Oh Okay Down The Escarpment Like The North South Lake Area Going Up To The Bottom Oh Yeah So You're Going Up The Poet's Ledge Yeah So What We're Hearing Is You Came Down The Escarpment You Get To Palinville Presumably You Have A Nice Aid Station There Because It's A Good Place To Set Shop For An Aid Station Did You Get Hurt Coming Down

[01:42:41] To Palinville Is That What It Sounds Like Or Where Did The Injury Happen It It Was Really Hot There Too That Was One Of The Harder Times Of The Whole Trip Yeah So I Don't Know When I

[01:43:17] I Have I Have It Is More Like A Generation Of Fatigue Or Like Muscle Type Then Ended Up I Couldn't Go Up Can Scale At All And Then I Have To Go Through The Devil's Path And Getting Slower And Slower And It's Getting Darker And Darker And It Was Literally Like Mentally And Physically

[01:43:47] I Have To Like It Was Hard So What Are You Doing For The Pain Are You Putting Ice On It Ace Bandage Taking Anti Inflammatories Is There Anything You're Trying To Do To Treat The Symptoms So It Was After Cataskill Then The Crew Can Meet Anything To The Next 8 Station Which Is Going To Be Plot Is It Plot

[01:44:17] Yeah That Little That Big Trailhead That's Right At The Bottom Of Catterfield High Peak So I Didn't Do Anything But We Just Went Through That Section But The Thing Happened Was We Were Going To Meet You

[01:44:55] Service But We Can Ping Her From The In Reach We Had An Idea But Her Pace Really Dropped And She Was With Two People Two People Were Pacing Her So She Had Good Support And I Think It Was At Night So It Was Really Tough It Was At Night And She Was Moving Really Slow In The Catskills At Night In The Dark After Rain And And And You Know She Was Hurting And I Thought That Could Have Been A Point Where

[01:45:25] She Gave So She She's Out On The Trail She's On The Eastern Side Of Devil's Path You Last Saw Her In Platte Cove Where You Get Her Geared Up To Do The Indian Head And Twin Sugar Loaf And Plateau Through There And Is She Falling Behind Now In Time In That Second And And She's And She's Got A Couple

[01:45:55] Pacers It's Night Time And Eventually What Do You See Like Some Headlights Coming Down The Trail Is That When You See Her Right You See The Headlights Literally Sleeping In The In The Lean To Just Watching For The Headlights Okay The Thing Is Like I Was Really Getting Slower And Slower And My One Of The Pacer Have A phone Call from His Family And Sounds Like Something

[01:46:25] Not Right And He's Talking Behind Me Something I Couldn't Hear Very Well But Something Wrong And Turned Out So One Of One Of The His Family Members Just Get Get To The Mink Hollow And

[01:46:54] Figure Out What We Going To Do And Also The Another Pacer Have To Leave Because She Have To Work Next Thing But It Was Already Like Right Before Sunrise Or Something So Our Goal Is Just Going To Get To The Mink Hollow And Then Meanwhile All Plan Was Shifted To Like So I Plan Like

[01:47:23] Kind Of Like Okay Plan And Never Change It Like Slower Plan Or Faster Plan At The Beginning So Everything Plan Have To Change Significantly At Some Point But That Was Crew Chief Job Now One Job And

[01:47:53] You Guys Went To Brioz Oh Whoa Whoa Whoa What So There's A Big Pit We're Off The Miso Soup Right And We're Switching We're Switching To Brioz And That's When The Pace Picks Up This Is I Think This Is How The Story Is Evolving So Who Wants To Roll The Film Forward Is This Glenn Multiple Things Are Happening At Once

[01:48:22] And We Had We Had A Friend Who Said She Was Going To Pace And Really Wanted To Be A Part Of It And She Is A Certain Way We

[01:48:42] Actually rented an airbnb in fenicia thinking this is like halfway you know this will be really smart we'll get it for two nights and if kumi needed to she could jump off the trail and go to this uh and take a shower but that was not in her mind at all that was not going to happen and she didn't need a shower because she got

[01:49:07] poured rain on so she didn't need one but anyway the uh the substitute was super excited to pace kumi and his section was later but he had to bump it up because he was going slower so we said we asked him his name's ed we asked ed we said ed can you bump it up can you come and meet with me and we'll go together and you could pace from mink hollow and so he was super excited so it

[01:49:35] was him and i sleeping in the lean-to waiting for the lights and then he said when we saw the lights he got so excited he had a caffeine pill and he was like already and the first thing kumi comes in and all she wants is i need my medical kit i need to sleep and i need to eat and we're not going to leave the lean-to because if we leave the lean-to i'm going to drop up so i'm not going back down to the

[01:50:03] um trailhead where the car is or where the van is and i'm not going back to phoenicia to sleep on a bed i'm going to stay here in this lean-to so we stayed in the lean-to probably two hours three i think an hour and a half yeah she slept for about an hour and a half got up worked on her feet uh and then her and ed left and then is this person ed does he have

[01:50:28] something to do with musical instruments yes okay we know we know ed god that guy is the group one of the greatest human beings i've ever met i've never met somebody who is as positive as that guy so you had the best person to boost you up and he knew he knew the course he knew where he was going so it's not not an issue and they they left just as the sun was coming so they had some night

[01:50:57] stuff and then they had a plateau and then over back towards um tremper and finish it so the one part of the story that we're we're still missing i mean we got that you were at mink hollow you're waiting for uh kumi and the pacer to come you're hanging out there with ed the ed that we know and love oh i'm sorry we bought a pizza yeah that's okay for the for the other pacers so the other

[01:51:25] pacers who had paced all day they we heard that they liked uh ham and pineapple or wine or something so we brought that okay we brought that up to the to the the the the the reason my crew have to go to the breos is they have to reschedule replan for the rest of the fk and we needed

[01:51:49] internet yeah that makes sense internet and also have to communicate to other pacers yeah yeah we had most repacers like committed it based on date so some person can get do it monday or tuesday and once they're thursday they have to figure out and also communicate and what time they have to be

[01:52:14] at certain place so the the impression i get is uh your support crew particularly your pacers have to be very fluid in terms of rescheduling and you know moving their plans around to be there when and where you need need to be there um so before stosh takes it over the only thing i have for for kumi at this

[01:52:38] part is did you have a slice of pizza when you're in mink hollow yeah that's not or glenn's not admitting one way or the other if she had brio's pizza we'll just leave it she had uh the soup and oh i remember so he broke i think it's cheese quesadilla or something from brio's right oh yeah

[01:53:06] so he broke cheese quesadilla i think i ate it oh wow there you go there you go it was the cheese quesadilla so that actually i usually order mac and cheese oh they didn't have it they took it off the main yeah so that's what i really expected but they don't have it anymore so then they she

[01:53:27] ordered cheese quesadilla or something and then i think i ate it at the wow so with this this point uh you you kind of knew egg jumps in you kind of knew you're falling behind how did you kick it into gear like was this pushing faster uphill going faster downhill flat sections what was the the kind of

[01:53:51] the program for you to kick it into gear and go to get this oh i'll let her speak about it but i just by the time she got out of the cat skills we had planned all these sections she was one whole section behind wow so and roughly glenn roughly how how many miles are these sections are we talking like

[01:54:14] seven to ten miles right more like yeah maybe ten yeah ten to twelve miles yeah okay so she's a whole section behind wow and peekamoose is basically halfway like when you get to peekamoose so she's out of the cat skill she's halfway and she's a whole section behind so we had to make sure she was still doing

[01:54:40] the number of sections she wanted to do per day but we also had to convince her to do a half a section extra on top of it or she wasn't going to get to the end and then we just there's one other caveat so the bridge at george washington bridge they close it every night the walk path between 12

[01:55:04] and 5 so if she gets there before 12 she can cross the bridge and and basically break the record the overall record but if she gets there at 12 on one she has to wait five hours like there's no way to go so there's huge incentive to make sure she's back on track but also um on track to get to the bridge

[01:55:29] before that's we heard that before when we uh interviewed chris leblanc chicken fat he did it unsupported and he ran into that problem so he just slept right at the beginning of the bridge and that's i mean so now once again kumi you're you're at mink hollow and stuff how did you kick it into gear and do these like half a sections faster added on to your sections that you were already doing

[01:55:57] so after i take care of my feet i kind of felt okay and then it worked out so then i started to shuffle a little bit and but still i have to go through the boroughs range later true like each chunk of the section but ended up like the my plan at the beginning was kind of very tight schedule but

[01:56:26] the day goes goes by i actually calculate a little bit more time in every sections so then you know i have a little bit of savings at the end and my pace is a little bit catching up and at the end i my pace kind of catching up to the plan and then able to less sleep

[01:56:55] yeah well but then yeah i that's because i kind of see so when i was when we're in catskills no one believed i can beat overall time it's way behind and i knew it but i still you know

[01:57:15] if i couldn't make it but still i can beat kim's female time but also there's no reason to quit so i'm just gonna keep moving and then see what's gonna happen later so then eventually my feet's

[01:57:34] getting a little bit okay not better but still i can shuffle then at the end everything work out and so at this at this time are you like sprinting like you know to pick up your pace and stuff like downhill is it just like free for all hands flailing running down hoping for dear life and then

[01:58:02] get it on the flat pavement and being okay no i think it's back to those sections so i think i think it's so many sections that we were trying to do per day and i think we we realized that she had to add on a half a section so uh maybe the fourth night we added on half a section and it meant she wasn't going to sleep as much the next day okay so it was like taking away sleep

[01:58:30] compared to fast but as we got closer to these towns we realized that we could make food like we didn't have to make food we could buy food so we went and we got uh we got ramen in goshen we went to a ramen restaurant she really liked that and you know stewards we really relied on stewards they had the breakfast sandwich we just run in and get a breakfast sandwich and like as we moved along and then

[01:58:57] as we got closer to woodbury we we got we we went to um we went we went to shake shack we went to chip we went to chipotle like we actually could access and bring food hot food when it was cold to her and you know not not a not that it's the best nutrition but it was quick easy um calories and she she was you know um and whenever she never finished anything then i would just turn around and eat it

[01:59:25] it's like that was my food too so um impressive that's i mean that's all that's i mean the next i would have to say you know like sometimes the next spot to hit you know when i mean i'm not familiar with doing fastest known times or long distance like this but the motivation to get food is is definitely something for me to kick it into gear and to get to quicker down the trail my god

[01:59:51] i got this at home i can't wait to get there and that was that the same same way with you kumi yeah when i said ramen noodle i was so happy something simple as ramen noodle is she makes her so that's it that's pretty impressive like you i'm surprised that you're not like a like a three-month backpacker uh out there doing like some crazy fastest known times on the the biggest peak

[02:00:19] so like yeah ramen noodles make me happy and like at the end of a six mile hike i'm just like god i need a sub i need three pizzas and some beers and stuff like that and she's just like yeah ramen noodles good for me that's crazy yeah i mean so now you're you're coming to the end is there throughout this whole section um like not sections but the whole long path besides that point on on mink hollow silver

[02:00:47] hollow and stuff where you started feeling the pain is there any other times you felt like like quitting like just like backing out and be like this is tough this is way too tough i can't do this i mean i never felt like it's tough i'm gonna quit that's the one thing i already decided never say

[02:01:08] from my mouth i'm gonna quit and also say something very negative but you know we we hit to the mink hollow and i have to go through plateau and get out and get to the phoenicia and then go to uh borough's wrench still my time it's kind of behind the schedule and then my plan actually like i plan it

[02:01:38] for this section like the escarment and also borough's wrench start from morning but because i'm getting slower all the hardest section actually went through at night and when i went through um

[02:02:01] borough's wrench i was andy and i have a andy with me and also glenn and michael was like calculating plan and also how to get out from the huge mountain range at brio's bar counter

[02:02:26] and they figure out they're gonna bring all camp gears to the permutative slight mountain campsite campsite and they're gonna set the 10 and also sleep eight and a food and i'm gonna stay at

[02:02:47] that campsite and then i actually spend about hour two hours three three hours wow and then that day was raining actually and then andy also have to carry all his camping gears and

[02:03:08] hands with huge pack and we're climbing up the slight mountain he actually fell from the rock and and when i realized he was totally upside down in front of me i was like andy but he was laughing

[02:03:29] i know he's okay he she said she just like slept from the rock and he didn't or anything but it was really crazy moment for us to go through borough's range and when we got to the campsite it was freezing cold

[02:03:51] because i didn't have enough clothing and also we didn't expect that much cold i was about to have a uh what's going on hypothermia wow and even they were not at the aid station not a stage uh campground yet because we are a little bit quicker to get to the campsite so we have to wait for like a 15 minutes or

[02:04:20] 20 minutes until they got to the spot so it was really tough moment to spend night and just a campground bike you know without any gears waiting for crews but wow most like that's the huge big moment that we have to go through we knew logistically that she couldn't make it to peekamoo's because if she made it to peekamoo's

[02:04:49] blue hole there's cars and she couldn't make it there basically like so from venetia she was going up up up up the borough's range we did go and meet her we what we hiked up from uh woodland valley campground we hiked up from there and we met her and we gave her fresh food and stuff and then andy joined her um and that's where ed left so ed was pacing her and then andy joined her and then andy's

[02:05:16] job was to take her up over um the rest of the borough's range and we were gonna we were hoping she had enough energy to make it to peekamoo's but we were tracking her she couldn't and so mike mike michael came up with the idea we need to pack in like a 45 pound bag of food camp gear stove everything and so we were slow because we were literally hiking up from the slide slide uh mountain trailhead and we

[02:05:45] just couldn't go any faster and it was it was night and it was dark and we were going slow and it was wet rainy and so then when we finally got there they were both there luckily and they were shivering and we wow we sat her down and we we've we've immediately um got off her wet clothes and put on dry stuff and then we made a tent and we stuck her in the tent and then i ended up taking off my warm clothes

[02:06:11] to give her because she was still shivering and so then uh we made coffee we made um miso soup and basically that's what she was eating um she wasn't really that like she wasn't she was more cold and shivery and and eating wasn't really a priority it was more of just trying to stay warm and then it ended up being the three of us and he had his own tent and then the three of us got into

[02:06:37] this two-person tent and just kept it warm and again it was this three-hour excursion um and then the sun started to come up we hear the birds you know maybe five five thirty and then we got her out we said you gotta keep moving and you gotta get to peek and moose and we'll bring you fresh um breakfast sandwiches from stewart's whatever but you gotta you got it seven miles to get to

[02:07:02] peek and moose wow and then wow yeah that that was the that was the that was the toughest moment in that the mink hollow wasn't as as bad because there was enough of us around and we had it wasn't rainy or anything but that section and i really thank michael for his knowledge in um you know uh survival survival skills because i just didn't have them i just didn't know what to do first i was just more

[02:07:30] concerned that she was shivering and she was cold and i thought that i thought she was going to stop and i said look the van is a mile and a half back you could walk to the van could sleep on a nice mattress and she was like no way wow so uh gloomy you're you're out there you're doing this um frankly things aren't going well you're having some bad luck you know a nagging ankle injury uh you're falling

[02:07:59] behind schedule it's like really really super cold even though it's in may you're shivering you're camping where you weren't expecting to camp um you told us earlier that the thought of quitting and giving up never entered your mind and probably at least half of our listeners don't believe that they think they think that it was it at the very least on the fringe of your mind um but i know you

[02:08:28] know given my past and the sports that i used to do um you do reach those points where you start struggling with why do i continue why do i keep pushing on and what is it that if if it never entered your mind if you're always able to just have that resolve to continue going on what is it that you

[02:08:54] had inside of you that kept you going and in the face of all that adversity i think because of friends like so many people literally supporting me and cheering me and you know this is i am a runner but this

[02:09:16] is not just my run this is the teamwork this is the team sports we're doing as a team i am just i'm just a machine to go further but you know that's the reason i can keep moving until i finish it because so many people started to me like they sacrificed their life as well so that's that was the

[02:09:46] huge support mental support to me while i was running nice i mean like that's just that's awesome so teamwork uh brings it all together so you're you're finishing you're kind of like on the final stretch where there's not enough there's not not enough but there's not as much craziness as the cat skills

[02:10:11] what's going through your heads when you're reaching down below like harriman and stuff where it's it's kind of flat are you basically like what did glenn say like you know what you have this amount of time you're moving a little slow get your ass in gear is that how he said it or did he say it differently like more positive so glenn is always telling me

[02:10:38] how much section i have to do and you know every day i have a goal to do you know so i know all the numbers in my head and i was calculating time and day and section and distance and vertical as well

[02:10:57] and then like after the cat skills i kind of see slightly see okay maybe i can still beat current if gaiti time i can probably push a little bit so then i started to like not like i can't run like

[02:11:23] very fast sprint but consistency is very very important to go through those like a long distance and then that consistency it's coming back to me after i left cat skills so then you know to me

[02:11:45] yes it's kind of flat but to me mentally toughest moment and the low and low moment was to get to the sound point that was the only section i didn't see anything in the course so i didn't know that much technical and also it's really like boring and then i went through that section at night as well

[02:12:09] it was hell to be like literally like it was just a 70 mile but it was too long to me to go through those minahuasca somehow like so you're like what about like when you hit like the palisades and stuff

[02:12:33] like that you know you're coming i could i could say so she she lucked out in that she got two serious ultra runners to run her through uh from woodbury through harriman all the way and they went all the way to mount ivy so mount ivy is sort of the beginning or the end of harriman and the beginning

[02:12:59] of the palisades okay i knew that she needed to get to mount ivy or that five-hour closure was going to be a major problem so we pushed hard through harriman and she didn't get there till like two 2 30 in the morning and then she only slept for maybe an hour and a half not even and i just said you

[02:13:25] just have to get up and you just have to move and then the last four sections she'd done them all multiple times so she knew them so it wasn't like she had to do anything and at that point we realized you don't even have to carry anything we can carry all your stuff all you have to do is run we know where nyack is there's a mcdonald's you can get a burger a fish filet and then as we got through

[02:13:54] nyack and we got towards uh tolman um and then we got up to the lookout where it's the new jersey part people from new york city started to run up the trail to meet her so now not just one pacer she had two then she had four then she had six and they started to run the last seven or eight miles until she

[02:14:21] got to the bridge and there was like 12 people well actually on the bridge people and one dog show up wow and we had to tell them okay we think she's going to be there at 11 pm and an hour later uh we think she's going to be there at 10 pm wow and then we're like well

[02:14:43] you know maybe she'll get there by nine wow she got there at 7 30 pm at the bridge she saw the sunset and more people came because it was not late and so she you know she kind of walked across the bridge uh it's working yeah sounds like a pretty grand finish i was gonna say like yeah you're on peek-a-moose and you're like

[02:15:12] i don't know if they can if she can beat this time and then all of a sudden you're you're you're hitting past the palisades and stuff like that and you're like yeah she's going to be there in an hour and then it's like oh she's going to be there in 30 minutes and you're you crush it by over four hours he was right she was actually running like wow after the peek-a-moose i have to push i really run

[02:15:38] whenever i can run yeah that's when you could make up time too with the people who see you have no i mean i'm not saying you have no climbing but it's just it's a lot of like good easy and you know that section so that means you know every freaking rock every dirt every way you can freaking just fly down through there so i could see wow that's awesome 15 people finishing you with over george washington that's pretty cool i gotta admit that's freaking epic and you know you also you know we

[02:16:07] didn't we we i didn't ask this question in the beginning but you also did this as a fundraiser for the new york new jersey trail conference that was cool what made you like decide to do that so like i always like wanted to do like volunteers work or something but you know we're leaving new york city and we don't own the car then it's really hard to get to the trail to help them so then i always

[02:16:33] thinking about oh do something for them but what and that's the also the opportunity to think about to raise money and connect to the long past fkt because you know like annie's from new york new jersey trail conference and because of their hard work we can enjoy in the nature running on the

[02:17:01] trails and always be safe so i think i just wanna i wanted to have opportunity to return to them nice i mean that's that's fantastic like so when you when you finish when you cross over george washington and you get to the finish of the long path what what are you thinking do you want to pass out and

[02:17:25] sleep for 23 days or some food like what was your your final thoughts this is a very famous moment that it's even on the youtube ice cream at the uh glenn i need an ipa nice i like that what's your choice so i asked him to get to i knew they're gonna stay around the

[02:17:54] phoenixia so i asked him can you get the ipa from the west calvary the cattle skill so he stopped by a general store to get the pack right from there yeah right in phoenixia so i knew i knew it was in the cooler the whole time i i see i saw beers in the cooler so that's i wanted to drink first

[02:18:23] well there you go there you go cheers to that that's awesome so you you set the fastest known time for both men and women killed it right you gotta you gotta say yes i mean be proud of it okay and what is your uh what does your t-shirt say this is here for the women's race yeah and uh where did you

[02:18:50] get that i saw somebody this last weekend with that this is the one ultra running community we're talking about always women's presentations very low compared to men's participation so we wanted to women to participate more trail running races but because women has a more

[02:19:15] like obstacles to join those races they're trying to like more like kind of like awareness that you know i'm always talking about the reason behind women cannot run races is you know typically women have more

[02:19:38] gender roles than men have more like traditionally but they have to change that roles in certain way then women have a more opportunity to do it because you know equal and we have a

[02:19:59] we should have same equal amount of experience and a chance to do the same things though men do correct i would like to say yeah to that sorry to be like that i mean we saw we saw mave win the freaking climate for climate she crushed it there and now then we see kumi like

[02:20:24] the tad like that's awesome yeah two weeks in a row uh we have guests on the show who are women who beat the men in a sport so i think that's cool i'm the father of two daughters and uh very cool yeah i think it's uh i think it's an important thing to create that awareness and also like what my experience

[02:20:49] is this past weekend uh with the climate for climate put on by the running kind and amy a really cool outfit but one of the things i took away from that was just a tremendous level of camaraderie and openness and fellowship uh amongst all the runners that were there at least those that we saw and then i see you know here with your fastest known time effort getting all these pacers involved

[02:21:16] you know mike ed um and others and then the the 16 or so people and the dog that meet up with you at the end you know it's it seems like a very inclusive community and that it's i guess maybe pun intended making strides and promoting you know awareness of uh you know women are here to kind of kick butt and

[02:21:39] you know do their thing so very cool correct i agree i agree that's freaking awesome congratulations kumi on setting the the fastest known time for the log path let's hope it it stays that way for a while let's hope ed doesn't get the idea in his head that he can beat it uh unless unless you're going to pace him the whole time i i suggest that's that's the way it seems no no no you're going too fast slow down

[02:22:04] slow down so one one thing kumi that uh stash and i promise is we're not going to break your fastest known time on the one path oh god so yeah we're not going to put that on our bucket list of things to do seven days that's that's what it takes me to charge up the car and drive up to new hampshire so well by the way how was how was the ipa was it cold i think i turned the freezer for a while i didn't

[02:22:29] drink it oh you didn't drink it i i did i didn't like immediately i came back to the apartment i drank it but it wasn't cool i just i had this image of you what is it about like 178th street you know downing this ipa and your moment of glory with your i'm here for the women's race shirt on and now i'm hearing you kind of like went back to the the apartment and had to cool down the beer yeah i wish i could but technically

[02:22:59] drinking on the street is illegal in new york city so i got a little bit like yeah if the cops came after you could just run away nice nice so now final question for you kumi and glenn as well now you do this all the time you guys are running around here and stuff having fun we have a special question at the end called post hike bruising bites now what do you guys enjoy like after you know

[02:23:27] doing something in the cat skills doesn't that matter husband valley stuff like that to go out and enjoy after you hike uh casually not on the run we're really like regular or three ohs right nice that's always being there like you know we run like a man just revenge cats bell whatever we do

[02:23:54] you know finicia it's always the center of the catskills and then they open late so you know we usually go to the brioes and they have a good beer selection as well so that's what i was going to add is they have a good beer so i mean that's that's what it is about so um kumi and glenn i really appreciate you joining us tonight it was a fantastic story uh just glad that you shattered

[02:24:22] that record not by like 15 minutes like it's probably but four hours over four hours so that's that blows my freaking mind is that just like you're like yeah peekamoo see i don't know if you'll be able to do it and then all of a sudden you beat it by four freaking hours that's that's insane so thank you for joining us greatly appreciate it uh we look forward to having you on on future podcasts you know can't
